Despite being an employee for a long time in my company, I have still had a few roadblocks in my way in relation to medical billing. Just as a warning if traveling to countries that have universal care, like Ireland, be prepared to have a long slow time with your insurance company. I had an overnight hospital stay in Ireland and they had two line items on my main hospital bill. One for the “private” room charge and one for the treatment. I went back and forth with my insurance for over a year. Even though the actual costs were less than I would have been charged in the states for the issue, every time I sent them my claim, with a letter of explanation as the phone representative told me to do, their claims department would reply with the same BS form letter requiring me to provide “detailed” billing information and breakdown of all specific services. Apparently they couldn’t find and apply any “codes” to just two lines of general invoice, and the hospital in Ireland claimed they don’t detail billing like that, so they wouldn’t give me something itemized. I also just paid the hospital in Ireland after a few months because I could fortunately afford to (they did take good care of me), I was getting tired of their threatening me with court documents for late payment, and the insurance, even if they paid, would basically be paying me back and not pay them directly anyway and I figured I’d get the money based on calls to the insurance company. I just didn’t think it would take a year. Eventually I had to go to appeals with my insurance and got paid minus my copay, which travel insurance covered. Just seemed they made it unnecessarily complicated and long. I’m guessing I should have gone straight to appealing as soon as they couldn’t “code” anything.

This was very informative. I wish I had read this back when my sister was going thru a lot of health issues and was in no condition to manage them herself.

It’s crazy how complicated billing can be and how much the prices vary between cash, insurance, and all these ridiculous add on fees and charges that are slapped on in case someone doesn’t dispute the charges. Plus all the random people that you thought were employed by the hospital, come out the woodwork to send their own bills that could be out of network!

I think I will also make it into a YouTube video too :) Personal life posts are so so fun to write, but not super informative after the fact so I'll always try to blend both helpful & personal from now on :)
